So where have you been? Umm… “I’ve been busy” doesn’t quite cover the 28 separate trips I took in the first 32 weeks of this year. Every other week from Florida to Dallas for work plus Salt Lake City and Phoenix thrown into the mix. Weddings, funerals, Europe… on and on, it’s nuts. And then you throw in that this work project by far the biggest & most stressful project I’ve ever been a part of because of the enormous scope and intense politics between the customer, partner company and my own company. All of that combined and I’m the most run down I’ve ever been in 14 years working in the software space.
I’ve gained 15 pounds. I wake up at night thinking about work and can’t get back to sleep. I’m working incredibly long hours, nights and weekends and attached to email 24/7 and still not keeping up. Every other part of my life has fallen to the wayside. Friends, family, hobbies, fun, sleep… and after 8 months of it – talking with my husband – I realized I am miserable.
I am an introverted Engineer at heart and so while working hard doesn’t bother me – the politics and spin and one-upmanship of this project drains my core life batteries. And so, for the first time in my career, I spoke with my boss and asked to be removed from this project. It was a long and hard decision because of the potential fame/glory/big-promotions that would come if I could kill myself for another 8-10 months and bring this high visibility project of household named company to fruition. But after long contemplation of the effort versus the reward I concluded that it just isn’t worth the sacrifice to me a this point in my life.
While my boss wasn’t thrilled she understood and I am transitioning off this project throughout the month of September and by October I will be completely transitioned!
Which means that slowly, slowly as life returns to a manageable place, I hope that will be able to carve out a bit of time to share here again. Because I miss my little side hobby of broadcasting what I wore to the Internets and interacting with you guys! Stay tuned!! 🙂
