You might laugh at a research scientist/college professor looking to the Kardashian Family for fashion inspiration (my husband thinks it is hilarious, along with my love of Us Weekly magazines and celebrity gossip). However, this inspiration is totally justified… let me explain myself:
When I was in high school and college, I was an avid distance runner and soccer player (I mean, just look at the size of my calves!). My leg muscles were so huge that my classmates would joke that I could squat while holding the entire soccer team, move the school with my legs, etc. I was mortified… and so envious of the thin, lithe legs and bodies of the models of the 90’s. No amount of dieting or exercise would change the shape of my legs.
But then a few wonderful, life-changing things happened (in no particular order). “Baby got back” became really popular at my school, along with the increasingly popular 90’s rap songs celebrating curves. “Bennifer” brought Jennifer Lopez front and center to my attention, along with the intense scrutiny/appreciation of her famous derriere. Iceberg-bound Leonardo DiCaprio drew a curvey Kate Winslet by candlelight. When I was in grad school, Kim Kardashian had a certain video leaked. Her butt was the talk of my research lab (you know, when we weren’t discussing cellular signaling and molecular cloning). My own personal acceptance of my curves was further solidified with the emergence of the Kardashian family on the red carpet.
It’s not all rainbows and butterflies, of course. I’ve had two kids (and gained and lost 45 lbs with each, it was NOT pretty). I still struggle with model-thin celebrity envy.
When I got back from a long run the other day, my 6-year old daughter told me the other day, “Mommy, I can’t wait until I’m grown up and have huge muscles in my legs like you and can run 5 miles because my legs will be soooo strong.” I was swooning in happiness until she then asked me why my butt jiggles so much when I walk… I guess you can’t have it all!
